Evaluation of Vim-thalamotomy effect in Patients with Parkinson disease and Essential Tremor due to Postural and Resting Tremo
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Tremor is defined as “a rhythmical involuntary oscillation of a body part”. The main characteristic symptom of the patients with Parkinson disease (PD) and Essential tremor (ET) is tremor. Cells in the thalamic ventral nuclear group fire at frequencies close to that of tremor for patients with PD and ET (Lenz et al., 1994). Tremor can be abolished by localized lesion of the nucleus ventralis intermedius (Vim) of the thalamus (Narabayashi, 1989). The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of Vim-thalamotomy by analyzing the power spectrum of the postural and resting tremor.

Comparison of VIM and STN DBS for Parkinsonian Resting and Postural/Action Tremor
BACKGROUND Resting tremor is common in Parkinson's disease (PD), but up to 47% of PD patients have action tremor, which is sometimes resistant to medications. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) of the thalamus or subthalamic nucleus (STN) is effective for medication-refractory tremor in PD, though it remains unclear whether STN DBS is as effective as VIM DBS ...
متن کاملA prospective single-blind study of Gamma Knife thalamotomy for tremor.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the safety and efficacy of unilateral Gamma Knife thalamotomy (GKT) for treatment of severe tremor with a prospective blinded assessment. METHODS Fifty patients (mean age: 74.5 years; 32 men) with severe refractory tremor (36 essential, 14 parkinsonian) were treated with unilateral GKT. Targeting of the ventral intermediate nucleus (Vim) was achieved with Leksell Gamma K...
متن کاملAltered Activation in Cerebellum Contralateral to Unilateral Thalamotomy May Mediate Tremor Suppression in Parkinson’s Disease: A Short-Term Regional Homogeneity fMRI Study
BACKGROUND Ventral intermediate nucleus thalamotomy is an effective treatment for Parkinson's disease tremor. However, its mechanism is still unclear. PURPOSE We used resting-state fMRI to investigate short-term ReHo changes after unilateral thalamotomy in tremor-dominant PD, and to speculate about its possible mechanism on tremor suppression. METHODS 26 patients and 31 healthy subjects (HS...
متن کاملQuantification of Parkinson Tremor Intensity Based On EMG Signal Analysis Using Fast Orthogonal Search Algorithm
The tremor injury is one of the common symptoms of Parkinson's disease. The patients suffering from Parkinson's disease have difficulty in controlling their movements owing to tremor. The intensity of the disease can be determined through specifying the range of intensity values of involuntary tremor in Parkinson patients. The level of disease in patients is determined through an empirical rang...
متن کاملLateralized Effects of Unilateral Thalamotomy and Thalamic Stimulation in Patients with Essential Tremor
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Stereotactic thalamotomy has been an effective surgical procedure in the treatment of medically refractory essential tremor (ET), however, little is known about the bilateral effects of unilateral ventralis intermedius (Vim) thalamotomy and Vim deep brain stimulation (DBS). We studied the lateralized effects of unilateral Vim thalamotomy and Vim DBS in ET patients. METH...
